LAND STEWARDSHIP

LAND STEWARDSHIP is a tool that promotes voluntary agreements between land or rights holders and non-profit organisations for the improvement of the natural and cultural values of an environment.
In Spain it has been promoted for decades as a key instrument for the conservation of habitats, ecosystems, species, landscapes and places of special value throughout the territory. Its great potential lies in the direct involvement of people and civil society in the conservation and recovery of nature.
According to data from the 7th Inventory of land stewardship initiatives in Spain (2023), in our country there are:
- 268 Land stewardship entities
- +4.600 Agreements
- +708.000 Hectares
The Land Stewardship Platform
The Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) has coordinated the Land Stewardship Platform since 2007, with the aim of:
- Contributing to the enhancement of land stewardship.
- Encouraging dialogue and the creation of meeting places between the different actors.
- Offering data and resources to diagnose the situation and evolution of land stewardship in Spain.
- Provide channels for advice.
- Providing information on land stewardship networks and organisations.
